I don't have a lot going on right now. I don't have a job, and housework is crappy. So, I am watching a lot of British Comedy and some drama. I am also watching PBS on my iPad. I really like it ! So, I watched two shows on the death of Martin L King and on the Freedom Riders. I think the only thing that surprised me about his death was that the man that killed him did it for fame. He didn't do it because he was a huge bigot...he did it because he wanted to be on the FBI's most wanted. I personally want to be famous because I am funny and fabulous !
The second show was the Freedom Riders. I really found this show disturbing. I guess because I can not relate to bigotry and hate. I knew nothing about the Freedom Riders. I thought it was about Rosa Parks. Nope, these people black and white took a bus from Washington D.C to Mississippi. They sat next to each other and when they got off the bus they were going to sit in the sections that were for white people only. Well the people of Alabama found out about these buses and when the bus arrived in one city they pretty much destroyed the bus, and beat up the people that were on the bus. This was my version of the south.

I was trying to think what I considered stereo typical of the south and when I saw that...I thought this is what I thought about it. Atlanta, is very much a metropolitan area. So, it's what I am used to...no prejudice. Who did I see dressed in white in the KKK in the 1950's of Mississippi ? Old white ladies....ladies who got married when they were 15 years old. Ladies who were uneducated and spent their time listening to a bigot on the pulpit . No, I am sure that is not always true, but when I looked at them it's what I saw.

I have a few things to say about this...and it's not good.... |
So, I have decided to read about the history of Georgia, history of Slavery and then "The Help". I just feel like if I am going to live here in the south, I better know what I am talking about.
