Last night I spent a good two hours reading "Foreign Affairs" magazine. Never in 4000 years would I ever imagine to be reading it. I would have thought...."This magazine sucks, it has no pictures". This October/November issues was all about 9/11. Well, not completely about it, but most of it. I was so glad to have subscribed to this magazine. I would have sat there, and would have known nothing about what lead up to 9/11. What Al Quaeda is all about, why Bin Laden hated us so much, and what may come of the Middle East. I had no idea what the Muslim Spring was.
A few days ago, am repair man came to look at the washer to see if he could repair it. He told me, if it was my washer, I would just buy a new one. He then proceeded to lecture me about appliances and then after seeing the picture of the Hindu god Ganesha he started to talk to me about the Muslim religion and Mohammad. Truly, I thought this man would never leave. I was waiting for him to discuss hatred or something bigoted. Well, he didn't really do that, but he did bash Koran and Mohammad. Truly I have never heard words like that coming from any ones mouth. He however did inspire me to read the Qur'an and decide for myself my personal views about it. To read these articles about 9/11 , it reminded me of the hatred toward human beings even though we have no idea who they are and if they inspire hatred towards other human beings. How grateful I am to be raised by a mother who was very open minded and accepting of others.
I never did journal about 9/11. I do however remember ( like everyone else) where I was and what I was doing. S was 9 months old and I had just made my way into the kitchen when T called. He told me to look at the TV that there was something I needed to see. So, I turned the TV to see one of the twin towers coming down in flames. I first thought it was a horrible plane crash. T knows how much I hate flying, so I thought why would he then show this to me. Well, then the other plane hit, and there was other news about the Pentagon, and other plane crashes. I called my friends and shared with them how scared I was. It was all so surreal. Like " This really can not be happening, this is from a movie right?". So, my friend and I went to Costco to buy WWW III supplies. The skies were empty and she talked about planes coming out to California. Well, this of course never transpired. I am sure it would have if Bin Laden had the money to do it. I never really thought about the twins towers, I knew nobody who worked there, and if I had ever visited NYC before 9/11 I doubt I would have ever visited them. All I cared about was the Statue of Liberty and what it represents to America. Not about what the Twin Towers and what they represented to the World.
Now, we all get to live in fear. We all get to have our bags checked inside and out. We all get to have our bodies scanned. My poor mother had her luggage and body checked so many times on our trip to London. We got to see military with huge guns at all the popular attractions in London and Paris. I get to have more fear of flying now. We can no longer say goodbye to our loved ones or meet them at the airport gates to greet them. If other things have taken place, I have no idea. I pretty much have lived in a bubble for many many years I have no idea what is out there.
I must say though, I am so glad that we no longer have that daily terrorist alert color thing going on . Considering half of America's population can not remember what color means what.
