Madonna and Child by Duccio, tempera and gold on wood, 1284, Siena |
Tempera, also known as egg tempera, is a permanent, fast-drying painting medium consisting of colored pigment mixed with a water-soluble binder medium (usually a glutinous material such as egg yolk or some other size). Tempera also refers to the paintings done in this medium. Tempera paintings are very long lasting, and examples from the 1st centuries AD still exist. Egg tempera was a primary method of painting until after 1500 when it was superseded by the invention of oil painting. Yes and again...that is a man...a man that would never look like Jesus.
Tempura, is a Japanese dish of seafood or vegetables that have been battered and deep fried.
It's hard to imagine someone as great as myself could mix those two up. Thank you Mary for pointing that out ! Can you imagine if I gave a tour to someone Japanese and kept saying "This painting was painted in Tempura paint"...yeah lets throw a shrimp up there and some veggies !! I think like I said before...I am in great need of a vacation.....
