It's St. Louis of Toulouse for dummies...such as myself :)

This large altarpiece was painted in about 1375 by Paolo di Giovanni Fei in Italy.  Fei was a painter of the Sienese school. It is showing Mary, Jesus, two angels, St. Francis and St. Louis of Anjou. This piece at the High Museum was by the Kress Foundation in 1958.  It is the oldest piece of art the museum holds. There is a lot to say a lot about this painting so I am going to tell you a few things about it.

The painting itself is painted in Tempera paint (not to be confused with Tempura). If you were to look closer you would see punched designs in the wood. Giovanni Fei's paintings are characterized by bright colors, a gilded and punched ground, and his naturalistic and ornamental detail. This piece was hung in a Franciscan church.

Mary is holding the baby Jesus. Jesus is holding a scroll that is inscribed John 8:12, "I am the light of the world".
St.Francis

St. Francis: Kneeling to the left of Mary is wearing the traditional Franciscan habit with a knotted cord. His hands are painted with the stigmata.

St. Louis of Anjou: He is kneeling to the right of Mary. He is also wearing a Franciscan habit. He is carrying a crozier and wearing mitre on his head. He is wearing white gloves with the stylized stigmata and his cape (so beautiful in person) is featured with the lilies of Anjou .The Crown below his feet is a symbol of his renunciation.
St. Louis of Anjou

History of St. Louis of Anjou for dummies ( such as myself)  :
*Born in 1274
*Father: Charles II of Naples and Sicily
*Mother: Niece of St. Elizabeth
* Named after his uncle the Holy King of France
* Louis was an angelic son. He was very loving, kind, generous and gentle. He loved to pray , he was extremely religious, and even practiced self mortification.
*When he was 14 he was kidnapped along with his two brothers and taken to Barcelona. He accepted his kidnapping and said,"Misfortune, is more useful to the the friends of God than misfortune, for on such occasions they can prove their loyalty to the their Lord."
*He was educated by Franciscan friars and Theology was his favorite subject.
*Became seriously ill and vowed that if he recovered that he would join the Order of Friars Minor.
* His father gave him permission to become a Friar and at age 21 he was selected by Pope Boniface VIII to the Bishopric at Toulouse.
*Died at age 24
*He was canonized as early as 1317 during his mother's lifetime.

Crozier:
Symbolism: To the Bishop as a shepard to his flock. The crook at the top-his obligaton to draw back those who stray from the faith.  The staff itself his both rod and staff.  A rod for punishing the recalcitrant (resisting authority or control; not obedient or compliant) and a staff for leading the faithful.

Mitre: is a type of headgear now known as a traditional , ceremonial head dress of bishops and certain abbots in the Roman Catholic Church, and other churches.
