Quilts at The High
Yes, I have a written something for my tour about this quilt. My story behind the quilt ? I was walking in the folk art section and wondering why this quilt was hanging. My mother is a beautiful quilter and has made quilts that could hang in a museum. So, what made this quilt so special ? This quilt was designed and quilted by Louisana Bendolf. Her mother being a quilter, Bendolf spent much of her childhood playing under quilts. Actually, I could copy and past her entire history here, but I think I will just provide a link instead. The importance to me about this quilt is the tradition of the Quilt. Again a link could be provided about The Gees Bend Quilters. They are a group of women who learned to quilt by their mothers. The Gees Bend started after the Civil War in Gee's Bend Alabama. Former slaves ripped random fabric and made quilts to keep their families warm. There is obviously more to the history than this. It was looking at the quilt now and knowing the tradition behind it.
Bendolf is purposeful in her quilting. The blocks and strips aren't random. When looking at her other quilts there is design, but what fabulous designs. These quilts sell between $1,000 to $10,000.

Thank you for sharing. The quilts are beautiful and I'd like to know more about the history behind them. I'd love to see photos of some of your mother's quilts.
