I am currently going sitting in the formal dining room of Mrs. F. She has a dining table seating for 10, but I know that it seats more. It looks upon her garden and trees. There is a small fireplace with cherubs. I don't know it is your typical English dining room, but never the less quite lovely. I arrived here two days ago from Gottingen, Germany. I consider myself quite the European traveller. Herr Nagel and helped me to purchase a train ticket to get back to London. It required 3 transfers which was not a big deal since I had just made the journey days ago. When I arrived in Gottingen unbeknownst to me my train had been cancelled. I of course had to ask a stranger for help. He informed me that I had to travel downstairs to the office and talk to someone about a new route. He printed up a new route that was 4 changes.
Frau Nagel and I downtown....she has no double chin... |
Travelling from Gottingen to Hannover I sat next to an old man who snored. From Hannover to Koln I sat with a young man who was travelling to the south of Germany near Stuttgart to school. He was very friendly and spoke very good English. The next train was an absolute nightmare. It was a French train company. The conductor was French snobby and scared the crap out of me. Because it was a different train than the ICE train I was supposed to take...I was afraid he was going to kick me off. Well, he didn't and I met a train full of very nice Germans and I nice girl from Pakistan. It turned out that the young lady from Pakistan was coming from Gottingen and travelling to Slough, England which is not far from Gerrards Cross. We spent our time together at the station in Brussels and had chats.
I finally made it to Marylebone and on to Gerrards Cross. It was quite the adventure and sure my blood pressure was crazy.
Yesterday Mrs. F took me to Waddesdon in Buckinghamshire. It was certainly the largest house I have ever been in. I suppose it could have been as large as Hearst Castle, but the decorations were so beautiful. The furniture was elegant and so was the wallpaper. They had a fabulous smoking room as well. I could imagine just hanging in there watching these men of the time smoking cigarettes and cigars. The furniture was all red and lots of tables and things. The home was owned by the Baron Ferdinand de Rothchild. It was enormous and the gentlemen wanted a larger home. I can't imagine being employed there in charge of hoovering the halls. It was everything that expected and more.
Today is Mrs. F's Birthday.
Her daughter is taking us to a former "Gentleman's Club" in London. It's for former students of Oxford and Cambridge. It's VERY formal and I am assuming a little snobby. I am excited. I am sure that taking pictures is very much forbidden, but how exciting being able to go ! What a privilege to be invited ! I wouldn't talk to anyone anyway...what an idiot they would find me to be !!
