Day 6 was the day I was supposed to return to England, but it didn't turn out that way. I instead waiting another day so that I could get a better rate on train tickets. So, instead I stayed in Herberhausen.
best bratwurst in town.... |
I got up in the morning and went with Sus to her work. She kindly gave me a free mammogram and ultrasound which I needed. I hadn't had one for two years and was grateful she was able to give me one. Seriously, again if I had money I would go to her every 2 years to have the procedure done. Her office was beautiful and the staff was so sweet ! I didn't feel that awkward other than everyone was speaking German. My boobies were photographed and x rays were examined. Susi brought me to a room to show me what was going on with them. She does this with every patient. It is so much better than going to a freaking mammogram factory in which they say, " Well, we will be contacting you in a few weeks to tell you what is going on". She sat down with me and showed me my x-rays. She showed me that I had a small cyst that was not cancerous and some calcium deposits which were fine.
She sent me on my way to downtown Gottingen. I honestly started walking into the center of city having no idea where I was . Some buildings looked familiar and then I saw "Tangente". It was a club I used to go dancing. It was a small club and the places I lived were not big on dance clubs. I went one time and requested Blue Monday by New Order, and as popular of a song I thought it was...they did not have it. I wasn't sure if it was worth returning to. I am pretty sure I went there twice. I remember the second time I went I was a little intoxicated. Actually, I was very intoxicated. I generally don't drink because I really don't feel that I need it. It just makes me tired and say and do things that lack common sense. I did meet a man however who told me that said I spoke really good German. So, I am thinking that I imagine I speak German well, play piano, and sing well while intoxicated. Unfortunately, I also hate the next morning. Besides, catch me after 10:30 at night and I am exactly the same way. Thus the reason I go to bed early.
Okay, so now that I have discussed my breasts and my reasons why I don't drink lets continue with my day ! I started walking to the downtown and I am approached by a nun who asked me where the train station. What is sad it that I had just come from that direction, but had no idea how to get back there. I felt pretty bad that I couldn't help her. I walked to the bus stop at Kornmarkt and waited for the bus to take me back to Herberhausen. I was again asked about the buses in German. Do I look German ? My name is Gretchen, but I am not German. I couldn't help her either. I get on the bus and ask how much it costs and he tells me three marks ? Well apparently you are supposed to just leave your money in the tray. I didn't know this and just shoved my in the appropriate slots. The bus driver got really pissed off at me. I wish I had the ability to speak my mind, but if you didn't know....I have no spine.
He was smiling, but refused to have any more pictures taken ! |
I got off the bus and started to walk up the hill to the N house. I passed the Mooney house and looked to see if it had changed since I had lived there. It looked the same except that there was a new family there in the drive way. They stared at me as I stared at them. I wanted to tell them that I was not stalking their house, but actually I lived there for awhile. I just kept walking. I got to the N house and was out of breath. Even when I was 24 I was still tired after walking up that hill. Ker was there with her friend and we played a gift game with NN. I then took a nap, had dinner with the N family and went downstairs to pack. It all fit into the suitcase and bags I had brought. I however did not bring a poster and a mug that a neighbor had given me. I went to a birthday party and sat around listening to other Germans talk. Again, being there brought back a lot of memories. Some of the neighbors remembered me ! Which I thought was really cool. I asked for a glass of water, but actually I asked for a coffee cup of water. So, he brought me one...and then let me keep it as a gift to remind me of the marvelous time I had at his birthday party. Also, to remind me to careful what I ask for :)
I again went to bed warm, happy and wishing that I could have stayed longer. I think my kids would have really liked visiting there !!
